On Friday, the riders were able to test intermediate and wet tires for the first time of the season in Imola. The head of the Pirelli racing division, Mario Isola, commented on the results of the first day of the race weekend and assessed the effectiveness of the trains.
Mario Isola: “Today was the first real test of an 18-inch intermediate and wet tire that had never been ridden in such cold conditions before. We managed to collect a lot of useful information. Overall, the rain and intermediate tires proved to be effective. Some riders have complained about warming up issues, but that was to be expected at this low temperature.
By far the most difficult aspect was choosing the right tires for the current track conditions. The most important point was the choice of the transition point between rain, intermediate tires and slicks.
Taking into account that Friday’s races were wet, the riders will receive an extra set of intermediate tires, which they have to hand in after the second practice session. The teams have no data on the performance of rubber on a dry track, but we’ll see what tomorrow brings. Maybe we can get that information before the sprint.”
