The stewards did not punish Mercedes

The stewards of the Miami Grand Prix have not punished the Mercedes team for violating the working rules in the pit lane during the second part of qualifying for the sprint.

The stewards received information from the race director that some Mercedes mechanics were working on the car without helmets, in violation of Article 34.13 of the sporting regulations. But stewards discovered that Mercedes was not the only team to have a number of mechanics working without helmets or goggles, “either at the pit stop location or in its immediate vicinity”.

Stewards noted that lifting the car and installing fans to cool the brakes without a helmet or eye protection “appears to be an established practice.”

After taking this into account, the stewards felt that “punishing one team, when almost all teams had the potential to violate this article in some way, would serve no useful purpose.”

They took no action but asked the FIA to consider making changes to current qualifying practices or the rules.
