The new products prepared by Mercedes did not work in qualifying for the sprint in Miami – both drivers crashed in the second session…
George Russell (11th): “During practice the Soft tires showed up well, allowing us to set a good pace, but with the Medium we couldn’t achieve this – and we ended up falling behind. The results turned out to be tight, everything was decided on hundredths, but we should not have come so close to the relegation zone. In the evening we will think about how we can achieve more tomorrow.
I have no doubt that we will get back to winning ways in the sprint, but we need to find a solution to our problems in qualifying. It’s hard to compete with your opponents when you start so far behind.
Almost everyone brought new products to this stage. McLaren has seriously updated the car, while Aston Martin has added more in the final stages. We all move on, but today we didn’t succeed.”
Lewis Hamilton (12th): “In the first part of qualifying the car made a very good impression, but I can’t say it worked terribly in the second part, and yet we only lost seven tenths of a second on the best time. This means that our car can only handle such a pace.
I foresee that there will be difficulties in the sprint. From twelfth place I don’t expect to be able to make much progress during the short race, because on this circuit it is not that easy to overtake, nor is it that easy to chase rivals. But we must try to reach the top eight if possible.
This weekend we decided not to experiment and try to let the car work normally. I feel like we got everything out of the W15, but we have to admit that the pace is now at this level.”
