During the sprint in Miami, Kevin Magnussen aggressively defended eighth position against Lewis Hamilon’s attacks and was awarded three penalties for going off track and taking advantage. The Haas driver mentioned all the deserved penalties and added that he did not like having to fight so aggressively, but that he had to do so to help teammate Nico Hulkenberg maintain seventh place.
Kevin Magnussen: “All my penalties were deserved, there’s no doubt about that, but I had to play this match again. I was in a very good position behind Nico, at the start I gained a lot of places and moved up to eighth place.
I protected Nico from Lewis because I was behind my teammate in the DRS zone and had a good pace. Then Nico cut the chicane and I was out of the DRS zone. If Nico had let me get closer to him and gotten DRS again, we would have easily finished seventh and eighth.
Instead, I found myself in a vulnerable position with Lewis. I started fighting him like crazy – I had to create a base for my partner, as I had already done in Jeddah. I started using these stupid tactics that I didn’t like at all. In the end, I did my job and showed that I am a team player, and Nico deserved the points because, thanks to the foundation I had laid, neither Lewis nor Yuki Tsunoda could overtake him.
I don’t like fighting like this in races at all, but I had to do it like this today.
