Lando Norris believes he could have been in a higher position based on the results of qualifying, but together with the McLaren engineers he chose the wrong direction when working with the settings. But his partner is willing to admit that sixth position really reflects the car’s capabilities.
Lando Norris (5th): “Today we were able to control the tire performance more effectively than yesterday, but there were more problems with the car. We’ve made some adjustments to the settings, although we’re probably going in the wrong direction.
Yesterday I rode much more confidently than in today’s qualifying, so we have to analyze some things. However, the result is of course still higher and we have not lost that much in terms of pole time. But I think for some reason we went a bit slower, and it shows in the lap times.
We had to rise to higher positions even though we did what we thought was right. However, when we go out on the road, sometimes things don’t go exactly as we planned. We have changed some things on the car, but if I had the chance to return to the previous settings I would, but it is clear that we do not have such an opportunity.”
Oscar Piastri (6th): “To be honest, I think the result reflects our capabilities quite accurately. We probably expected to get a little closer to Ferrari, but we have to admit that they clearly looked better than us today.
However, I’m more or less satisfied with how I qualified. In fact, I think I have performed better than ever in all areas and am satisfied with my work. Also when you look at how much I lost to Lando and other riders who were ahead of me.
I hope I can maintain this fifth position in the race, although I can’t promise that. To be honest, this task is not that easy to complete. Red Bull is as always capable of high speeds, the Ferrari also looks very good and my partner’s car has more technical innovations than mine.
So maybe sixth starting position is where we should be. We’ll see what we can achieve tomorrow, but I’ll still try to move forward.
