Lewis Hamilton finished sixth and was very happy with this result, but his teammate, George Russell, took 8th place, after which he dissatisfiedly stated that “there was no pace at all.” At the same time, both Mercedes drivers are very happy for Lando Norris, who achieved the first victory of his career.
Lewis Hamilton (6th): “It was a really good day! I am very happy for the team, because we have finally been able to find the right settings, and I am happy with the car. It was certainly much more comfortable to drive. The car allowed me to fight with my opponents and during the race I had several interesting duels. For example, at Nico Hulkenberg, where everything was literally on the edge, our cars were driving close to each other, but for some reason I remained completely calm at that moment.
Towards the end of the race I was hanging behind one of the Red Bull cars – which was great because I could already see that both it and one of the Ferraris were already quite close…
Of course I’m very happy for Lando Norris and I just told him he has to stay in Miami until tomorrow. He won the race, so now he will have to change his plans and fly home on a different flight! A first win is always a special achievement and having started my career with McLaren I am very pleased that they have achieved further success.”
George Russell (8th): “At the start, Sergio Perez took the inside line, after which he ended up outside the track and when he returned, several riders had to slow down because of him. And for the second day in a row I’m starting from the outside of the track, which puts me in an unfavorable position.
It’s a tough day, there was no pace at all and I’ll have to check the car carefully because it feels like there’s something wrong with it. The pace was clearly worse than we expected. Compared to Lewis I rode much slower, although of course I still earned points. But we are still far from the level we want to be.
Of course I am happy for Lando, this is a fully deserved first victory, but he has been performing very well for a long time!”
