The Sauber drivers did not earn any points in Miami: Guanyu Zhou finished fourteenth, Valtteri Bottas sixteenth. The team noted that they could not count on points due to the speed of the car, but the engineers are preparing new products for the next stage in Imola, which should help improve their performance.
Guanyu Zhou (14th): “Today we did everything we could. A difficult race, which in many ways was a repeat of Saturday’s sprint, but with a good first segment.
Unfortunately I was stuck behind Alex Albon – I was faster in the corners, but on the straights the top speed of the Williams was higher. Even with DRS I couldn’t close the gap to overtake.
We will continue to work. Unlike our competitors, we haven’t made any major updates in the last two stages. However, the team is making a significant effort and we are confident in the new products we are currently working on. The updates will appear on the car at Imola and I hope they will help us fight for the points.”
Valtteri Bottas (16th): “Given the starting position, the right decision was made to try an alternative strategy. Unfortunately, the moment the safety car came onto the track worked against us. The car had no pace, so it was not possible to gain back positions.
However, we learned a lot this weekend and we get the chance to apply what we learned in two weeks at Imola on a very different type of track. In addition, the team will bring several new products that should help. This weekend we saw that the competition is incredibly tight and that every little thing can make a difference.”
