Fernando Alonso earned two points for Aston Martin by finishing ninth in Miami. The Spanish rider was satisfied with his race and congratulated Lando Norris on his first career victory.
Lance Stroll received a ten-second time penalty because he had driven off the track and thus gained a lead in the battle against Alex Albon. In the race report the Canadian is in 17th place.
Fernando Alonso (9th): “After a difficult Saturday, it is nice to end the race weekend with some points for the team. I had some luck with the timing of the virtual safety car and then the real safety car, which brought the peloton together. The team took advantage of this opportunity: I switched to medium tires.
This decision allowed us to change the strategy and carry out several overtaking actions. I loved racing; apparently we were a little more competitive than in qualifying. But we still have work to do to improve in the coming races.
I’m happy for Lando. The first win is always special.”
Lance walk (17th): “Not the best race. I made an early pit stop and a few laps later the safety car came out. The opponents, who had not stopped by that time, gained an advantage and our strategy was spoiled.
I was then able to overtake several cars and finished thirteenth, but then got a penalty for overtaking Alex Albon. The team and I will look into everything later, but at the moment the fine seems strange.
We will work hard in the coming weeks to bring a faster car to Imola.”
