Hulkenberg: Sauber had only one problem: Moniza

Nico Hulkenberg will leave Haas F1 at the end of the season to join Sauber and Audi next year. In Miami, the German spoke to reporters about his new status…

Nico Hulkenberg: “Last year there was interest from Sauber, but I didn’t get such an opportunity – I was closely linked to Haas F1. But in the end we signed a promising multi-year contract some time ago.

Andreas Seidl played an important role in my decision. He is one of the decision makers, one of the key figures in the Audi project. He is always honest in his dealings with me. I remember calling him in 2020 when he was working at McLaren and asking if I had a chance. He replied, “I hope not.” This time it was different, he really wanted to get my signature on the contract.

I drove for Sauber in 2013, but the conditions were completely different then. Everything was good with the team. Then Sauber only had one problem: team leader Moniza Kaltenborn. But apart from her, I have never had any problems with employees, engineers or mechanics in any team I played for.”
