On Thursday, Nico Hulkenberg spoke to the press in Miami for the first time since signing a contract with Sauber/Audi. The German driver admitted that having the ‘right’ passport helped him sign a contract with the German carmaker, but that this was not a decisive factor.
“This factor also played a role, but was secondary,” Racingnews365 quotes Niko. “It’s not that I was specifically looking for the opportunity to sign a contract with this team. A racer is always looking for the best possible options that he thinks will provide more opportunities in the future. I think Audi is the best option in my case.
Over the years I have gone through different periods. There were weeks when I didn’t think about the prospects at all, because I was happy with everything – I just went with the flow and enjoyed life. But there were times when I wanted to fly more, look for opportunities and figure out my future. It’s safe to say that I took advantage of the time I had a break in my career.
By then I thought I was done with Formula 1 as I had been involved in motor racing for over twenty years since I was young. I had the opportunity to lead a normal life, relax, gain strength and feel the desire to return. The rest is history.”
