Former team boss Otmar Szafnauer told the RacingNews365 podcast that McLaren cannot slow down its development schedule if they want to battle Red Bull.
Otmar Szafnauer: “If you don’t win and you’re chasing world champions, you can’t stop. You need to make sure you update the car more often than the person you’re chasing, and that all these new features work. Or new products must be larger in size and have a greater effect. From the outside it seems that McLaren is succeeding in this so far.
Last year they started the season poorly, were in very bad form, but at the end of the year they improved noticeably and understood which direction to go. This is very important for them if they want to achieve more. Like I said: bring more new products that work better – and progress is guaranteed.
From the development of new products to installation on the machine it takes eight to twelve weeks. It all depends on the extent of the updates. All employees are involved in this process. When McLaren executives thank the people at the grassroots, they are absolutely right: these people are doing their utmost to make everything work.”
