Sergio Perez finished fifth in Miami, but moved up to fourth position after Carlos Sainz’s penalty. The Red Bull Racing driver spoke about the problems with the car that prevented him from achieving more, noting the high speed of the McLaren, but adding that the Woking team would not have such an advantage at other circuits compared to their rivals.
“I had problems with the speed in the race,” Sergio Perez said after the finish. “I just couldn’t pick up the pace when I needed to.” My team and I need to work on finding out the reasons. I had problems with the front tires in fast corners, and with the rear tires in slow corners. As a result, we had to make a serious compromise in the settings.
McLaren was already very fast in qualifying, but they botched it by not being able to get the Soft tires to work, even though their car was fast all weekend. We fell a bit behind and in the first part of the race Lando Norris put serious pressure on me.
I suspect their speed is related to the characteristics of the track. On some circuits we will be fast, on others there may be problems. But I am sure we will still have a tough fight with McLaren.”
