Mercedes is disappointed with the results of qualifying at Imola, where the team took pole a year ago and has now failed to make the top ten…
George Russell (11th): “When we couldn’t warm up the tires quickly in the first Grand Prix, we worked in a series of circles – and the second fastest circle always worked out better. In Australia, Alpine and McLaren’s rivals qualified on the first lap and we qualified on the third or fifth lap. But today the red flags got in the way.
It’s a shame it all ended like this, but if there’s a weekend where you can hold out, it’s a sprint weekend, when there’s a chance to recover on Saturday.
Saturday’s sprint with the new cars will certainly be interesting, we will be able to follow the rivals closer, but the distance is too short to take advantage of more careful rubber consumption. However, on Sunday there is an opportunity to achieve more – we are only moving forward.”
Lewis Hamilton (13th): “Not our best qualifier. We arrived in Imola with optimism – everyone on base worked hard on the car, but on Friday nothing happened. I think we didn’t work well as a team today.
Tomorrow we will do everything we can to earn back. The race will be tough, but who knows. Maybe we can win back a few seats. Now our goal every weekend is to minimize losses.”
