In the coming weeks, Carlos Sainz will have to decide on his plans for 2025: accept the offer from Mercedes or Sauber/Audi.
The German publication F1-Insider writes about the choice the Spanish driver faces. Carlos himself hoped to move to Red Bull Racing, but this option is no longer relevant as the champion team wants to continue its partnership with Sergio Perez.
Sauber/Audi offers Carlos Sainz a multi-year contract and good financial compensation, but makes no guarantees about his sporting prospects. In addition, Audi set a deadline for Carlos to make a decision: the Monaco Grand Prix, which will be held from May 24 to 26.
If Sainz has not made a decision by then or refuses, Audi will begin negotiations with alternative candidates. Among them are Esteban Ocon and Pierre Gasly. It is telling that last season’s Formula 2 champion and Sauber reserve driver Théo Pourcher is not on the list.
As an alternative to Sauber/Audi, Carlos Sainz has an offer from Mercedes. Carlos reportedly already has a contract on his desk, agreed with Toto Wolff, but the problem is that it only applies to 2025.
Mercedes does not want to commit to a long-term commitment with Sainz in case Max Verstappen decides to leave Red Bull Racing at the end of 2025 or Kimi Antonelli proves to be so good that he is ready to strengthen the team from Brackley.
In this case, Carlos may find himself without a contract with Mercedes until 2026 and the option with Audi will no longer be available. One thing is certain: Sainz will have to make a difficult decision in the near future.
