Kevin Magnussen set the fourth fastest qualifying time for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Haas’ best result ever. His teammate Mick Schumacher qualified 12th and admitted a mistake on the fast lap.
Kevin Magnussen (4th): “What a result! I’m overwhelmed with emotions and I can’t believe how close we are to the top three. Fourth place is the best qualifying result in Haas history, so I am very proud and happy for the team.
In qualifying I flew off the track into the gravel, but was able to return by applying a four-step turn. The car was phenomenal and I can’t believe we are fourth.
It looks like tomorrow has dry weather in store for us. I don’t know what result to expect, but we will do our best, just like today.”
Mick Schumacher (12th): “A mistake in Turn 7 caused me to lose almost a second. Otherwise I most likely would have made it to the final. It’s a shame, but there are two races left this weekend and I hope I can compete for higher positions – the car drives well.
In Melbourne we not only fought with rivals, but also kept the tires in good condition for a long time. It should help tomorrow. Hopefully luck is on our side and we earn some points.”
Gunther Steiner, team leader: “Good day. The weather conditions proved difficult, but everyone is in an equal position and we needed a good result after the Australian stage. In Melbourne the team did not have the best weekend, but in Imola we have been doing everything right since Friday morning.
Kevin’s fourth place is the best finish in Haas history. As for Mick, he came up just a little short to reach the final. Twelfth place at the start, however, is not so bad. Let’s see what we can do tomorrow.”
