Ayumu Iwasa set the fastest time in Formula 2 qualifying in Hungary. For the DAMS driver this was the first pole of his career. Marcus Armstrong will start with him from the front row in Sunday’s race.
Racers were not in the pits after the start of qualifying and took to the track straight away. The last to leave was Frederick Vesti. After completing two warm-up laps, the riders began to attack in full force. Markus Armstrong was the first to set the fastest time, but the Hitech representative’s result was surpassed by Theo Purscher and Frederik Vesti, who led the protocol.
Not everyone managed to pass the first fast lap without a hitch – Roy Nissany locked the wheels on the brakes in the first corner, ruining not only the attempt but also the set of tires.
Behind Vesti, there was a close battle between Drugovic, Pursher and Vips for second place, with Drugovic taking the lead, after which the riders completed the first attempt and returned to the pits. Potentially good time Logan Sargent could show, but after two fast sectors the Carlin racer turned into pit lane.
With twelve minutes to go into qualifying, the riders began to return to the track for a second set of fast laps. At this point Oliver Caldwell, who was working on his program on an empty track, showed the best time, winning 0.047 s off Vesti’s time.
Marcus Armstrong outperformed Caldwell’s result, Logan Sargent finished the lap in second, but was immediately knocked out by Theo Purscher. Championship leader Felipe Drugovic is in fourth place.
The riders cooled the tires in one lap, after which they continued to attack. Drugovich managed to add and climb to second place. Theo Purscher also improved his time, but Felipe could not beat the time. However, Ayumu Iwasa proved to be the fastest – the DAMS rider improved Armstrong’s result by three tenths and secured himself pole position.
On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first ten places start in reverse order. Jack Duane will start tomorrow’s race from pole position. Enzo Fittipaldi starts with him from the front row.
