Ferrari’s results in qualifying for the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix proved contradictory. Charles Leclerc was in the race for pole, but was more than seven tenths behind pole holder Max Verstappen in the final to set the second fastest time. His teammate Carlos Sainz crashed his car in the second session and will start tenth in Saturday’s sprint.
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “A very difficult qualifying, especially on slicks it was tough as there were a lot of wet spots on the road surface. In the end it all came down to putting in laps in the early sessions and putting in a decisive run in the final.
What makes me especially sad is that I made the wrong choice in the final, but that’s life. We will draw conclusions – after all, second place is not a disaster. The main events of tomorrow and the day after tomorrow – then you have to give everything as much as possible.
Carlos Sainz (10th): “Honestly, it’s hard for me to say why I made a mistake that I didn’t expect at all. On that lap I didn’t attack the limit at all. It was just a normal circle that we had to drive to gather information as we reacted to the approaching rain.
Unfortunately I lost control of the car. For some reason there were no signs that such a thing could happen, although of course the conditions were difficult and I flew off the track. In general, the situation is not ideal.
I think the rear wheels slipped as I entered the last corner. Maybe it started to rain already, maybe the tires overheated after two fast laps in a row. I don’t know, we have to figure it out, but I don’t think everything happened because of my fault. If you don’t attack at the limit, you usually don’t make mistakes.”
