WEC: Alpine presented the hydrogen prototype Alpenglow

Today the weather is beautiful in Spa and the 6-hour race, the third stage of the WEC, recently started there, but before that a rather interesting event took place: journalists and fans saw the Alpine Alpenglow Hy4 concept car with a hydrogen engine power plant for the first time on the circuit.

Yesterday there was something like a presentation of the so-called ‘running prototype’, and today the car went onto the track for the first time. The next demonstration runs are scheduled for June 14 and 15 and will take place before the start of the Le Mans Marathon.

The Alpenglow concept car was first shown at the Paris Motor Show in 2022, and Alpine remains actively involved in this promising area: so far the prototype has a 2-liter 4-cylinder turbo engine with 340 hp, integrated with a hydrogen fuel cell . The next step should be a completely new, more advanced V6 hydrogen power plant, which is expected to be presented before the end of the year.

In essence, the Alpneglow Hy4 is a kind of laboratory on wheels, and Bruno Famen, head of Alpine Motorsports, is very optimistic: “We believe that hydrogen engines are a promising direction. The transition to hydrogen fuel is a crucial phase in the decarbonisation of motorsport, and for now we are talking about the next generation of endurance racing cars, but in the future this could also have implications for Formula 1.”
