With less than two hours to go before the end of the WEC stage in Spa, a serious accident took place on the Kemmel straight involving cars of different classes.
Earl Bamber in the #2 Cadillac battled for third position in the Hypercar class with the Porsche 963 of Neel Jani, and at Radillon both were a lap ahead of Sean Gelael in the Belgian WRT BMW M4 GT3.
When Bamber tried to overtake Jani, suddenly moving to the right side of the track, he hit Gelael’s car, causing the Cadillac to spin and be thrown into the bumps at high speed. The Cadillac hypercar, which lost control, again hit the Indonesian driver’s car, which in turn also crashed into a barrier.
Although the accident looked terrifying, fortunately neither Bamber nor Gelael were injured. This happened over an hour ago, but the red flag regime has not yet been canceled and the race will not go ahead as the fence repairs are still not completed.
At the time the race was stopped, two Ferrari cars were in the lead – the first position was occupied by the hypercar No. 51, driven by Alessandro Pier Guidi, in the second position was Antonio Fuoco, driver of the crew No. 50.
