A week ago, Lando Norris won the Miami Grand Prix in a McLaren car that had all the technical updates prepared by the team for the sixth round of the season, while Oscar Piastri’s MCL38 had only about half of those improvements .
Nevertheless, Oscar had a great first half of the race, staying in second place for a long time, but, unlike his partner, was unlucky with the safety car. Ultimately, after the incident with Carlos Sainz, Piastri only finished 13th, but that’s another story. In Miami, McLaren once again appreciated not only the young Australian’s speed, but also his qualities as a team player.
“Oscar has once again shown that he is a very strong team player,” said Andrea Stella, head of McLaren. – When I said to him: “Oscar, we are giving the (new) side pontoons and bottom to Lando”, deep down he was not very happy, that’s for sure. However, he did not make it difficult for us at all to make this decision. It wasn’t like he started asking questions like “Why?”
Oscar understood our arguments and immediately showed his willingness to support the team – by the way, just like everyone around him. I think he gained a lot of useful experience in Miami. Regarding the incident with Carlos, Sainz was a little late in braking, which caused his car to spin. In my opinion it was just a racing incident, which in no way detracts from everything Oscar achieved last weekend.”
After six stages of the season, Piastri is in 6th place in the individual rankings, with 41 points.
