Last year Williams driver Nicholas Latifi was the victim of social media bullying after a final lap crash in Abu Dhabi, and this year in Austria, female fans have been posting on social media about insults and sexual harassment in Spielberg’s stands.
Formula 1 responded with the Drive it Out campaign launched today to combat abuse in racing and social media. Twenty drivers, Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali and FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem starred in the video, which will be shown for broadcasts around the world and on video screens on the track.
“Passion and competition are a very important part of our sport, but they can go too far, causing verbal abuse of fans, journalists, presenters and drivers both verbally and online.
We are all sending out a clear signal that this is unacceptable and must stop. Those who continue to spread abusive comments are not welcome in our sport.”
