Frederic Vasseur assures that despite Lewis Hamilton’s impending transfer from Mercedes to the Scuderia, his relationship with Toto Wolff has remained virtually unchanged. The two leaders of the rival teams are old friends, and so far there have been no situations where their relationship has been tested to the limit.
The seven-time world champion’s contract with Ferrari was announced in February, but when Vasseur was asked in a recent interview with La Repubblica whether this had led to complications, he replied: “No, they are still normal. When I came to Formula 1 ten years ago, we both understood that in some situations we would inevitably become competitors, that such a moment would come, and that this could cause problems in our relationship.
But it is also true that we have never been direct rivals until now. Last year was our first time competing at the track, but we always tried not to mix business and personal matters. In our sport it is not always easy, and it is quite difficult to completely separate these things.”
However, it doesn’t look like they’ll have much disagreement this year – probably fortunately for both of them. Mercedes has had a poor start to the season and the drivers rarely find themselves in a battle of principle with Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. Over the first six races, the Brackley team managed to score just 64 points and currently sits in 4th place in the Constructors’ Championship, just 22 points ahead of Aston Martin.
Ferrari, on the other hand, is performing quite confidently, the Italian team already has 187 points and there are all signs that it will only gain momentum. In particular, the Scuderia is preparing for its home stage in Imola a whole series of technical innovations that will allow it to widen and possibly narrow the gap with the leaders.
