Before the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, Pierre Gasly drove around the virtual version of the Enzo and Dino Ferrari circuit, talking about some of the features of the classic circuit in Imola, which the Alpine driver calls one of his favorites . During his collaboration with AlphaTauri he participated there three times, showed good results in qualifying and achieved points twice.
Pierre Gasly: “Hello everyone! This is another preview of the track and we will talk about Imola. So let’s go! The runway is great, one of my favorites and is old school so the landing zones are not that wide, covered with gravel and grass so you can’t make any mistakes there at all.
We accelerate along the straight, give full throttle and not much happens. We approach the first braking zone and maintain fairly high engine speeds. We try to use the curb, although quite serious problems can arise here, because the car can deviate from the trajectory. It is important to try to drive these corners (Variante Tamburello) in a straight line, with minimal steering input, and then the very interesting part of the circle begins.
We enter the bends at high speed (Variante Villeneuve), then use the curb and before the 7th bend (Tosa) we slow down considerably. But it’s important to get out the right way, and the road goes up here. We take the next bend to the left at a very high speed, followed by light and very short braking, after which we try to maintain sufficient speed in the first bend to the right (Aque Minerale), after which there is a bend in which it is quite difficult to reach the top correctly.
At the next chicane (Variante Alta) you should use the curbs and again try to cut off as much as possible, but it is important to keep the car between the two white lines.
The path then heads downhill towards the last two left turns before you have to slow down, but this is not the most difficult part of the circle. In turn 17 you need to use the inner curb a little, then level the car, go through the last turn and the acceleration at its exit should start early, trying to maintain the maximum possible speed. That’s all!”
