Before the start of the Hungarian weekend, Sebastian Vettel announced his retirement at the end of the season – and Pierre Gasly spoke of a story that happened in 2016, when he became the GP2 champion, but there was no place for him in Formula 1.
Pierre Gasly: ”I met Sebastian when I started the Red Bull youth program, he spent his last season in the team, I saw how hard he works, how committed to our sport.
Two years later I won the GP2 title and there was no place for me in Formula 1. I was in Singapore and called him in the evening, hoping for at least a five minute conversation. I needed advice on how to proceed, how to deal with the Red Bull program.
We ended up talking for an hour and a half. He drove for Ferrari and I thought I was very low on his list of priorities, but he spent an hour and a half talking to me, giving advice on how to handle, how to deal with Red Bull, how to proceed.
I will always be very grateful to him for that. After that we had friendly relations, a few times we ate together. Sebastian is not only a great driver, but also a great person.”
