Kevin Magnussen arrived at Imola with ten penalty points to his name. If the Dane takes two more points he will be disqualified from one stage, and at the FIA press conference the Haas driver stated that in some cases the fines are disproportionate to the actions on track.
Kevin Magnussen: “I think my next set of penalties will result in me missing the race. On previous occasions when I scored points, I acted as a team player and helped my teammate, allowing the team to earn valuable points.
I don’t like these rules, but I don’t make them up. I only have two points left, so I have to act carefully to avoid being disqualified from the race. I don’t think it’s right that I’m being threatened with suspension because of penalty points I earned for driving too wide on the white line or running my wheels over the curb.
The rules are what they are and I accept them. Although there are many possibilities to make them better. It’s not just about penalty points. There are many more races now than in the years when penalty points were introduced, so it is much easier to get suspended for minor offences.”
