Under the technical leadership of Adrian Newey, Red Bull Racing became one of the most successful teams in Formula 1 history, with seven championship titles and six constructors’ championships.
In an interview with Eddie Jordan at the launch of Oyster Yachts in Monaco, Newey recalled his move to Red Bull in 2005 and his divorce in 2024…
Adrian Newey: “At the time, at the end of 2005, many called my decision suicidal: to move from McLaren to a young team that was considered a party team. But after what we achieved together, starting with the first win, the first double, the first title, the decision to leave was even harder.
The team was my family and I don’t really feel like a father, but with a certain degree of responsibility. However, the team is now very mature and well organised, which gives me the opportunity to leave and take on a new challenge.
I gave three farewell speeches, if you can call them that. One in the engineers room in Miami, the second in the pits, the third at the base in Milton Keynes. It was quite difficult and very emotional, because I have been with Red Bull almost from the very beginning and participated together with Christian in the creation and development of the team.”
