Indy 500: Erickson suffers a serious crash during practice

Yesterday was another day of practice in Indianapolis ahead of the Indy 500, and two Swedish drivers, competing for different teams in the American series, were involved in very serious accidents under similar circumstances.

First, Linus Lundqvist, a young driver from Chip Ganassi Racing, made a mistake in Turn 2: his car spun after hitting the white line with the left front wheel at high speed. But in his case, the car wasn’t damaged that much.

But Marcus Ericsson, who has been driving for Andretti Global since this season, was much less lucky: he lost control of the No. 28 car in the fourth corner of the oval circuit and it was thrown onto the barriers on the right side of the track. After a few more pirouettes, her left side collided with the fence separating the pit lane entrance.

Fortunately, Marcus was not injured, he got out of the cockpit of the destroyed car independently and was immediately taken to the circuit’s medical center, from where he was soon released. Michael Andretti’s team confirmed that they will prepare a spare car for Erickson, and that he will be able to participate in today’s practices – in the so-called “Fast Friday”.

“I hit the curb slightly, but apparently that was enough to make the car skid and I turned into a passenger,” said the Swede, who won the 2022 Indy 500 and took 2nd place in this classic race last year. – I’m very sad. I feel very uncomfortable towards the team because they have serious work to do. That’s probably the worst.”
