Pirelli brought a “soft” three compound to Imola and are happy with the choice they made…
Simone BerraPirelli Chief Engineer: “Apart from the five minutes lost due to red flags, we spent 115 action-packed minutes in Imola on Friday on one of the classic circuits of the championship.
We brought the three softest compounds to this event based on what we saw in 2022, when the C2 compound was largely unused, and believe this choice will give teams more choice in strategic options, even though this race is mostly a one-pit stop.
After yesterday’s heavy rain, the track condition in the first practice left a lot to be desired, but the grip improved with every lap. The wind was a major obstacle, especially in the first session, but the temperature remained stable. We will see similar conditions in Sunday’s race.
The Medium and Hard compounds worked fine, but the Soft tires, especially in high temperatures, may not withstand long distances. The speed difference between the trains is approximately five-tenths. Not all teams were able to get the most out of the Soft and the Medium suffers from some granulation on the right front tire.”
