At the initiative of Sebastian Vettel, an event in memory of Ayrton Senna and Roland Ratzenberger was held yesterday in Imola: despite the bad weather, not only Formula 1, F2 and F3 youth series drivers and representatives of the press took part in the evening racing across the circuit, but also Stefano Domenicali and leaders of various teams.
The four-time world champion ensured that a batch of T-shirts was released especially for this event in the colors of Senna’s helmet, the same bright yellow locks that the race participants attached to the barriers at the Tamburello corner, and bracelets in the colors of the Austrian flag, dedicated to Ratzenberger.
Symbolically, it was raining at that moment, but this did not stop Sebastian from expressing sincere words about Senna and Ratzenberger, and he also praised the efforts of the FIA and Formula 1 to improve safety standards.
“The most important thing for me is that these events are not forgotten,” Vettel said. “To this day, all riders benefit from the safety measures developed and introduced after that black weekend at Imola. As tragic as these events were, it was equally important that they had an impact on improving safety standards.
Cars have indeed become safer, but risks still remain, so we must continue this work.
Ayrton was a special person, his achievements in Formula 1 cannot be compared – just look at what success he achieved in a very short time and under what conditions he managed to beat his rivals. Even if you don’t consider Senna your favorite driver, you have great respect for what he did for Brazil, where he became the idol of an entire generation.”
