Oscar Piastri: We were just a little short of pole position

The McLaren drivers had a great qualifying at Imola, finishing 2nd and 3rd and hoping they can compete with Max Verstappen in tomorrow’s race. In any case, they are already ahead of Ferrari, and on the track, where a lot depends on the starting position.

Oscar Piastri (2nd): “Everything went quite well, although I drove a bit sloppily in the last corner, but here it is generally very difficult to drive a perfect lap. So I’m quite happy.

From the first moment I stepped onto the track, I felt very comfortable behind the wheel. We fell just a little short of pole position, but I’m still very happy. It’s been a while since I started from the front row!

We’ll see what we can achieve tomorrow, but I think we showed good pace all weekend, that’s for sure. Of course, Max Verstappen and Red Bull can never be written off, and we’ve just seen more evidence of that, but our confidence is at a very high level.

Of course, Imola is not one of the circuits where it is easy to overtake, but we have no doubt that we can achieve a good result.”

Lando Norris (3rd): “The third result shows that we did very well. My partner and I were less than a tenth behind the pole time – the results were very tight, but the weekend went well for our team.

Oscar drove a great lap, just like Max. Qualifying was interesting, but I already want tomorrow to come sooner. We are slowly closing the gap to the leaders, and since we managed to stay ahead of Ferrari, this can already be considered a good performance. I expect the race to be very competitive, but everything should go well.

I hope an exciting Grand Prix awaits us, although it won’t be easy. A lot will depend on the first lap, on the choice of tactics and the pit stops.”
