For the Hungarian stage, Aston Martin has prepared an original rear wing solution with rounded end plates – this will increase downforce but will create turbulence in the airflow behind the car, which goes against the spirit but not the letter of the current regulations.
At a press conference on Friday, Alpine F1 sporting director Alan Permane said that if the decision is effective and raises no objections from the FIA, everyone will copy it.
Alan Permain, Alpine F1 Sports Director: “I have no doubt that nine teams are now exploring this solution on CFD computers. And if it gives the slightest increase in speed, you’ll soon see nine more of these wings. I don’t understand why this won’t happen if the solution is completely legal.
I understand the position on the spirit and letter of the regulations, but our aim is to get maximum speed and reliability out of the car. The FIA and Formula 1 have to decide whether this is against the spirit of the rules, but I doubt anything can be done about this as the season progresses. I’m sure if the car gets faster with a wing like that, you’ll soon see similar designs from other teams.”
