Mercedes drivers are not too happy with the behavior of their cars, with George Russell saying sixth result was the maximum that could be expected in qualifying.
George Russel (6th): “To be honest, I haven’t watched the video of the round yet, but it feels like the sixth result is our maximum. I didn’t know exactly what I could count on, but I did everything I could. So the result reflects the level we are at now.
Moreover, at the end of the second session they put rolled tires on my car, while I had already completed a few laps on this set, which put me in an unfavorable situation and was already four tenths slower than those on the new tires . I thought that if we had also supplied a fresh kit, I would have made it to the final without any problems.
After all, a situation could arise when yellow flags or red flags suddenly appeared on the track, then we simply would not get out of the second session. So I was a little upset. But it’s good that everything went more or less successfully.”
Lewis Hamilton (8th): “Although we had more difficulties today than yesterday, I still enjoyed it. In general I like qualifying because Saturdays are always interesting, but lately it’s been hard for me on Saturdays.
If we don’t manage to improve the balance of the car, I don’t even know what we can count on tomorrow. You literally have to fly on the edge. The car behaves very nervously and when working with the settings we try not to make significant changes to it, as before, but literally adjust them a little bit.
It feels like everything went well yesterday and the new products prepared for this weekend have made an excellent impression. But today the rear of the car lacked downforce and in qualifying it was even more unstable than in practice. There was no other option but to get on the track and deal with these problems somehow.
But as the lap went on the rear tires started to overheat, the car was sliding more and more and by the time I reached the last corner the behavior had changed quite a bit.”
