Stewards at the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix have fined Oscar Piastri for losing three positions at the start of Sunday’s race for blocking Kevin Magnussen in qualifying.
Oscar hindered Kevin in the 2-3 connection when the Haas driver was busy with the decisive attempt in the first part of qualifying. The Dane’s circle was spoiled and he got no further.
The stewards took into account the words of the McLaren driver that, due to the specific configuration of the track, he did not see Magnussen, but as soon as he noticed his opponent in the mirrors, he immediately tried to give way. However, the stewards examined the recording of Piastri’s radio conversations with the team and determined that the team had not warned its driver – such cases are interpreted as ‘accidental blocking’ and are punishable by loss of positions at the start.
Oscar Piastri will therefore start fifth at Imola. His teammate Lando Norris moved to the front row of the starting field. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz also gained one position each.
