Aston Martin is disappointed with the results of qualifying at Imola. The team’s best result was thirteenth place by Lance Stroll.
His teammate Fernando Alonso crashed his car in the third practice session. The mechanics managed to repair the Spaniard’s AMR24 at the start of qualifying; Fernando drove some fast laps, but showed it the last time. After Logan Sargent’s result was disallowed for infringement, Alonso moved up to nineteenth place.
Lance walk (13th): “This is not the result we expected today; the results of the session were a little disappointing. Right now we don’t have enough speed to fight in such a dense platoon.
I felt like I did a good last lap, but it wasn’t enough to qualify for the final. We have work to do for tomorrow’s race.”
Fernando Alonso (19th): “Today is one of those days where everything went wrong for us. It all started with a heavy crash in the third practice. The mechanics did a great job getting the car going again for the first part of qualifying.
I hit the track a few minutes after the start of the session and was ready to do whatever it took to progress. My best lap was when the car was heavy due to the large amount of fuel in the tank, and for the final attempt I had to return to the pits due to a technical problem.
The car drove well in qualifying and I think the pace could have been faster, so it’s a shame we couldn’t improve my time.
It is very difficult to overtake on this track, so I have a difficult race ahead of me, but we can learn a lot tomorrow.”
