Aston Martin’s best result in qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix was Lance Stroll’s fourteenth place. His teammate Sebastian Vettel crashed the car at the end of the third practice and set the eighteenth fastest time in qualifying. The team admitted that the speed of the car was not enough to fight for higher positions.
Lance Walk (14th): “The fourteenth fastest time in qualifying is not the result we wanted today. Yesterday we looked more competitive, but today the conditions have changed significantly – the car had no grip. The team will analyze the telemetry to understand exactly what went wrong.
We usually look better in the races, but it’s hard to overtake at this track, so it will be difficult to make progress tomorrow, but maybe the weather will surprise us and play into our hands.
Sebastian Vettel (18th): “It’s a shame I crashed the car in the third practice. Obviously it’s my fault, but I didn’t attack with all my strength when it happened.
Track condition improved significantly during the first part of qualifying. I thought I had a good first lap but then I could only do one lap to cool the tires – as a result they overheated for the last try.
Tomorrow I will not have the best starting position. The repair of the car, which we completed in the last few minutes before the start of qualifying, also did not contribute to progress – making it even more offensive.
There are practically no overtaking opportunities on the track, so you have to think about the strategy for the race.”
Mike Krak, team leader: “Days like these show the perseverance and determination of the whole team. Lance performed well and moved into the second part where he showed the 14th fastest time. We just didn’t have the speed to fight for the final.
Sebastian had a difficult day. He crashed the car in the third practice session – we were racing against the clock to have time to restore technique to the start of qualifying. Our technicians acted flawlessly and repaired everything. They prepared the car for qualifying, but unfortunately Sebastian only showed the 18th fastest time.
We are waiting for a lot of work in the race, given the starting positions. But when the weather is changeable, anything can happen.”
