Formula 2: Jack Doohan wins Saturday’s race in Hungary

Jack Doohan won the Formula 2 race in Hungary on Saturday with his second win in his debut season. Jüri Vips and Enzo Fittipaldi climbed the podium with him.

By the time the Formula 2 race started, the weather cleared over the Hungaroring and the evening sun peeked through the clouds. Starting from pole, Jack Doohan gave Fittipaldi the lead at the start, but Enzo locked the wheels on the brakes in the second corner, allowing Jack to regain the lead. In addition, Fittipaldi missed Vips to second place.

Logan Sargent and Dennis Hauger collided behind the leaders in the first corner – Sargent was wedged between Felipe Drugovich and Hauger and touched Logan’s car. Both riders ended the fight with this, but Sargent was able to return to the pits under his own power.

A safety car drove onto the track for the marshals to evacuate Hauger’s car. The stewards recognized the collision as a racing incident. Theo Purscher also became an unwitting victim of this incident – he had to go off the track so as not to hurt Hauger, and he rolled back to sixteenth place.

The race resumed on the fourth lap. Duane got off to a good start this time and kept the lead. There were no changes in the top ten, although Liam Lawson actively pressured Marcus Armstrong into the battle for eighth in the first corner.

The lead Duane started to move away from the pack, but Vips was attacked by Fittipaldi, who was in turn pressured by the championship leader Felipe Drugovic.

Behind, between Novalak and Nissan, there was a collision, with Novalak having a flat right front wheel and Nissan a broken front wing. Both reached the pits under their own power and continued to fight after the pit stop. The stewards found Novalak guilty of the collision and the French rider returned to the pits to serve out the fine.

Halfway through the distance, the gaps in the top three have stabilized. Tuo Pursher, who lost positions at the start, moved up to thirteenth place. On lap fifteen, battling for fourteenth, David Beckman, after a good fight, overtook Marino Sato in the inside radius in the second corner.

Richard Fershhor, who was in tenth place, was given a five-second penalty for breaking the track limits. He was later punished with another penalty for violating the track’s boundaries – this time a ten-second one.

On lap seventeen, Armstrong tried to attack Jehan Daruwala, but the Prema rider fought back and kept sixth. But Marcus didn’t give up and attacked Jehan in the first corner on lap nine – there was contact between the riders and Armstrong was off the track.

Liam Lawson took advantage of this and overtook Marcus, who continued the race in eighth position. The stewards did not ignore the incident and punished Daruwala with a 10-second penalty.

On lap twenty three, Lawson attacked Daruwala in turn one and took the lead. Jehan lost speed as he came out of the corner and was overtaken by Armstrong and Iwasa. At the end of the lap, Daruvala turned into the pits to serve a fine and change tires.

Jack Doohan confidently took the race to victory, finishing Jüri Wips by five seconds and Enzo Fittipaldi by six seconds. Championship leader Felipe Drugovic finished fourth and further extended his lead over Theo Purcher, who finished ninth. The best lap was for Richard Fershor.
