Max Verstappen won the race at Imola, but according to the three-time world champion he had to put in a lot of effort.
Max Verstappen: “I had to attack the limit the entire race and I immediately tried to create some kind of gap. I think we could maintain a high pace with confidence on the Medium tires, but it was more difficult to work with the Hard tires, especially in the last 10 or 15 laps.
There was no clutch anymore and the car skidded a lot. I saw that Lando was gradually getting closer, so in the last ten laps I had to attack with full force, but it was not easy, because the tires had already lost their effectiveness and I had to keep the pace high.
I couldn’t afford to make mistakes; luckily I managed to avoid them. Of course I am very happy to have won the race in Imola today. After Friday’s practice we made a lot of changes to the car, although of course we didn’t have much information before the race – maybe that’s why when we switched to hard tires there were more problems.
Overall, considering where we started this weekend, we can only be happy with both yesterday’s qualifying pole position and today’s victory.”
