On Thursday, Imola native Stefano Domenicali invited all the leaders of the championship teams to a dinner, and Toto Wolff shared his impressions of the atmosphere in which the party took place.
“First of all, I have to emphasize that it was surprisingly fun. Although the atmosphere at the table was initially a bit tense,” the leader of the Mercedes team told Sky Sports. – I didn’t mean to communicate with anyone, but it all ended with us putting the knives in our pockets (laughs) and everyone talking animatedly to each other.
Stefano made all the right speeches about how lucky we were to work in Formula 1, so we had a nice time – it was nice to see everyone together at the same table. Moreover, we have spoken little about the situation in the championship, although everyone agrees that the level of rivalry has not been this high for a long time.”
Of course, Wolff also commented on the results of yesterday’s qualifying: “I think if you look at the results you can see that the gap to the leaders has narrowed a bit, so this can be considered progress. Still, we are four tenths behind the pole time, so we have to work better.
We are going in the right direction and even a sixth starting position is not enough, but that is the reality. Nevertheless, although slowly, we are still moving forward. First of all, when we refine the car, we try to ensure that the W15 copes better with medium and high-speed corners, so we do not plan to specially prepare for races that take place on circuits with special characteristics – I’ve got it about Monaco and Monza.
Including the new products the team has prepared for this weekend, they are more focused on improving the overall balance of the chassis rather than solving specific problems. Therefore, it is difficult to say how our affairs will develop next weekend in Monaco – everything could be good, but it could also be bad. We can say that we practically do not take this race into account, because it takes place on a very slow circuit.”
