After the finish of the race in Imola, Lando Norris said he was just a few laps short of overtaking Max Verstappen. Perhaps Lando would not have needed these laps if he returned to the track after a pit stop for Max’s teammate Sergio Perez and did not lose time behind the Mexican.
However, Red Bull motorsport advisor Helmut Marko told German Sky that this was not the deciding factor: “If that, if that, I don’t think Lando’s pit stop decided everything. Much more important was that Max drove the segment very well on Medium tires.
However, we were slower than the McLaren on hard tires. After two or three laps on this set, the tire temperature dropped, putting the tires outside of their optimal operating range.
Max performed incredibly and drove flawlessly. Luckily Lando made two or three mistakes when he caught up. This kept him outside the DRS zone.”
