Italian journalist Leo Turini has made no secret of the fact that he sympathizes with Ferrari. After the race in Imola, Turini regretted in his column that his favorite team had lost again.
I immediately say: Imola has won. People, fans, spectators. This was not the standard Formula 1 race of recent years, which was dominated by soft drink brands. Those who experienced the inconvenience of last year’s floods realized the symbolic value of the past stage.
As you know, there was no lack of tension on the track in the final laps, but it was not Ferrari that battled for victory with Max Verstappen, but Lando Norris in McLaren. And now I have a speech to make and I ask for patience from my readers.
After 63 laps of the Grand Prix without a safety car, Charles Leclerc was only seven seconds behind Max. This means that the red team has made a leap in speed. Just a few months ago, Charles’ lead would have been the same as normal in cycling.
It’s good that the gap is smaller now, but I wouldn’t be completely honest if I didn’t say that the Prancing Stallion has been overtaken by McLaren. The aforementioned Norris finished ahead of Leclerc, while his teammate Oscar Piastri stayed ahead of Carlos Sainz.
So we are not involved in the struggle for victory. Ferrari has closed the gap with Red Bull, but is still in third place in terms of speed and even Frederic Vasseur cannot consider this state of affairs as satisfactory.
The second is the first of the losers. What can we say about who took third place? That’s why it’s important to think big: what is already being done at McLaren can be done in Maranello, without waiting for Lewis Hamilton and Adrian Newey.
This Sunday we have a race in Monaco on Leclerc’s home track. John Elkann has only one question for the team to answer: Do we want to try to win?
