Monza hopes to sign a new ten-year contract

Yesterday at the Monza circuit a summary of the results of the next phase of the circuit’s reconstruction, which is nearing completion, took place. Particularly in some parts of the ring, the classic circuit was expanded and the asphalt surface was completely renewed. replaced along the entire circle.

Angelo Sticchi Damiani, president of the Italian national federation ACI, spoke to the press in Monza: “If we have certainty about the possibility of public financing, we will try to negotiate with Formula 1. With this we aim for an agreement of ten years, according to a model already tested in Hungary.”

The preparation work for the Italian Grand Prix, scheduled for September 1, is almost complete and must be fully completed in a month, at the end of June, to meet the deadlines set by the FIA. Under the federation’s new rules, organizers must report on track surface renewal 60 days before the race.

As part of the reconstruction of the circuit, new underground passages were built and existing ones modernized – increasing the efficiency and safety of transport communications in Monza was one of the conditions that Formula 1 imposed on the promoters of the Italian stage.

“Doing all this work turned out to be harder than I thought,” admitted Sticky Damiani. – We faced many problems that had no end in sight. In Formula 1 they ask for the circuits to be brought to the highest possible quality. Matteo Salvini, the country’s Minister of Infrastructure, is closely monitoring the progress of the work, and I am sure he will do everything possible to support us. We at ACI also go to great lengths.

But until the contract with Liberty Media is signed, we cannot rest assured because there are no guarantees and circumstances are changing very quickly. Last weekend the Prime Minister of one of the Asian countries that wants to win a Formula 1 race was in Imola. The difficulty is that, on the one hand, Liberty Media wants to hold championship stages in those countries where you can make a lot of money from providing guest services, mainly the services of the Paddock Club.

On the other hand, there are fewer and fewer stages in Europe and although, for example, a new race in Madrid appears on the calendar, countries such as France and Germany do not have their own national Grand Prix. In Germany, however, they want to give the race back, because the Audi factory team will soon participate in the championship. In short, making loud statements is a useless exercise: we must be realistic and understand that we must act quickly, because time is against us…

In addition, we must take into account that Monza is one of the circuits that pays Formula 1 the least (since 2018, promoters pay 20 million dollars for the right to organize the Italian Grand Prix), and the new contract provides for an obligation to to automatically increase this plan by 3% per year.”
