Toto Wolff assures that he does not envy McLaren, which, unlike the factory team of the Stuttgart concern, is already fighting for victories in races this season, despite the fact that its cars have the same Mercedes power plants.
After the first seven stages of the season, McLaren sits confidently in third place in the Constructors’ Championship, scoring almost twice as many points as Mercedes. In Miami, Lando Norris won the race and in Imola he finished second, although he fought with Max Verstappen to the finish, losing to the three-time world champion by just 0.725 seconds.
“First of all, I love this sport because the stopwatch never lies,” said the Mercedes team boss. “McLaren is doing well and we have to respect the way they do things. The fiercer the competition in the leadership group, the better for our sport, the better for everyone.
I look at this without any jealousy – on the contrary, I say that we should also strive for this. Ultimately, this simply testifies to the quality of technical developments, because we have to move forward step by step. I believe McLaren made changes to the concept underlying their car quite late in the winter off-season, then waited for the right time to introduce technical innovations that allowed them to improve.
We are just trying to decide on some kind of stable platform, on the basis of which we can work on further modernization of the machine. We lost some time as we wiggled around and tried different solutions, which made us think it was possible to increase the efficiency of the chassis.
Time is something that money cannot buy in Formula 1, so if you make a mistake you immediately fall back, and it is very difficult to catch up.”
