Toto Wolff, Team leader: “I told the team that we need to write down absolutely everything we did today, including eating and drinking, so we can repeat it and succeed next time. (laughs) This pole was a relief for the summer holidays.
From the very beginning of qualifying we saw that our tires work in such conditions, so the balance of the car was good. With every drive to the track we added speed and at the right time we achieved the desired result.
At a time like that you want to enjoy pole position, but we have mixed feelings because Lewis could be on top.
This result is very important for us, this year we were chronically lacking speed in a fast lap and today we are on pole. Let’s see what we can achieve tomorrow. We have speed again, we are back in the fight.”
George Russell (1st): “I am in seventh heaven with happiness and in complete ecstasy. Yesterday was a disaster for us, the worst Friday of the season, but the team has worked incredibly hard and we have taken a big step forward.
In Formula 1, it’s all about the little things, but when you get into work mode, the car literally flies around the track, which we proved today. When I looked at the scoreboard after a quick lap and saw that I had the best time, I had an incredible feeling. We need to analyze our performance today and find the reason. We have some ideas, but we still don’t quite understand them.
Today’s result is very important to us. I am very happy for the team, tomorrow we will do everything. build on the success.”
Lewis Hamilton (7th): “I was sure the post or front row was already in the pocket, but when I activated DRS on a fast lap, the system didn’t work. It would be great to capture the entire front row at the start of tomorrow’s race today, but failures happen.
Congratulations to George, he did a great job, got a great result for the team. Considering everything we’ve been through this year, this success will give us strength and motivation. I am very happy for all our employees. It’s great, we weren’t expecting it at all.”
