The presentation of the No. 20 BMW M Team WRT hypercar, in which the team will compete for victory at this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans, took place at the Pompidou Exhibition Center in Paris. The car has a very bright and attractive paint scheme – in fact, yesterday’s event was dedicated to its unusual design, created by Julie Meretu, a famous American artist of Ethiopian descent.
Therefore, the full name of the car, which claims to be considered a modern work of art, is the BMW M Hybrid V8 Art Car. By the way, in the USA Julie Mehretu has already received a number of very prestigious awards for her work.
“I realized that the whole point of the Art Car project was to create something new, while being inventive and pushing the boundaries of what was possible,” said the artist. – For me, a car is a moving image, made for the track, not for a museum.
I had a model of a BMW hypercar in my studio and I looked at one of my paintings and thought, “What if you imagine the car flying through this painting and these colors staying on it.” This is how the idea arose to make a sketch in which all the colors would be mixed…”
The design of the BMW hypercar, which Robin Frijns, Rene Rast and Sheldon van der Linde will race at Le Mans, reflects the motifs of Julie Mehretou’s monumental work entitled Everywhen, which is currently on display in the Venetian palace Palazzo Grassi at the exhibition of contemporary art.
