George Russell took his first career pole position by qualifying for the Hungarian Grand Prix. This is the first pole position of the season for the Mercedes team. Commenting on his result, George said the car’s speed was a surprise to him.
George Russell: “I’m in seventh heaven! Yesterday we had the worst Friday of the season. We worked hard, but we didn’t know which way to go.
In the final qualifying on the last lap I managed to get through the first corner very quickly, then the second – over the course of the circle I was getting faster and faster. When I crossed the finish line I looked up at the big screen and saw that I had first place – just unbelievable! Now we need to understand, because of what it was possible to show such speed.
Tomorrow I will do my best, but there is no doubt that today is a special day.”
