Among the eight victories that Daniel Ricciardo has achieved in Formula 1 over the years, there is a victory in Monaco, which he considers a special achievement – also because he won that race in 2018 under special circumstances.
In his Red Bull RB14 car, the power plant malfunctioned on the 28th lap of the race, causing a loss of 25% of power due to the failure of the MGU-K engine generator, and only six of the eight transmission gears working, but the Australian was still able to cross the finish line first.
Now that Daniel plays for Visa RB, there is of course no question of repeating such achievements, but the team from Faenza is now in good shape, thanks to its car it can regularly earn points, at least Yuka Tsunoda has managed to do this four of the five previous phases.
“Now I start the weekend without any special expectations and I am ready for any development of the events – while of course there is a certain curiosity about how well we can deal with this,” said Ricciardo, speaking about the upcoming Grand Prix. – But by the way, I didn’t perform in Monaco last year. I was there as a fan then – drinking, having fun and all that. But I’m kidding!
But I’m already looking forward to returning to the cockpit, because Monaco is a special circuit. Last year, when I watched this race from the sidelines, I didn’t even know if I would get the chance to compete here again, so now I’m mainly in a fun mood and I hope this will help me get good laps.
Our team is doing very well. I think our car is good, that’s for sure, although of course there are areas where improvements need to be made, but overall all the technical innovations we install on the VCARB 01 help increase the speed. This allows you to make progress. For example, we felt Aston Martin was too far ahead, but it looks like we are more or less ready to compete with them, which is encouraging.”
After seven stages of the season, Visa RB are sixth in the Constructors’ Championship, with 20 points, of which Tsunoda earned 15, and Ricciardo just five. However, over the entire last year, the team, which was then called AlphaTauri, only achieved 20 points.
