The Andretti Cadillac project continues preparations for its debut in Formula 1, despite the championship owners’ formal refusal to allow the new team to start. It was recently announced that Pat Symonds would be joining the team, but judging by Mario Andretti’s latest comments, the prospects for the project seem dim.
The 1978 world champion said Liberty Media CEO Greg Maffei interrupted his conversation with Stefano Domenicali in Miami on Saturday and vowed to do everything possible to block Michael Andretti’s bid.
“Mr. Maffei interrupted our conversation and said, ‘Mario, I want to say that I will do everything possible to ensure that Michael never participates in Formula 1,'” Mario Andretti told NBC. “Then he left and I couldn’t believe his words. They surprised me.
We’re talking business, and I didn’t think we were talking about anything personal. I could not believe it. His words were like a bullet fired into my heart.”
