Sunday’s Formula 2 race at the Hungaroring ended with Theo Purscher’s victory. For the ART driver, who comes second in the individual classification, this is the third victory of the season. Enzo Fittipaldi and Ayumu Iwasa climbed the podium with him.
At the start of the Formula 2 race, the track had dried up sufficiently, so the racers went to the starting grid on slicks. Pole holder Ayumu Iwasa started badly and let not only Marcus Armstrong, but also Theo Purscher through.
Logan Sargent also had a bad start – the American rider lost six positions and finished the first lap in 11th place. Fittipialdi rose from ninth to sixth, Vesti from seventh to fifth. Jack Duane rolled back from tenth to last position due to car problems and slowly returned to the pits.
On lap four, Fittipaldi moved up to fifth and overtook Vesti. Almost immediately after losing position, Vesti was given a five-second penalty for pushing Yuri Vips off the track on the first lap.
On lap 8, championship leader Felipe Drugovic opened up a wave of pit stops, switching from Soft to Medium. Jehan Daruvala and Oliver Caldwell went with him to change tires.
Later, the three leaders went to the pits – Armstrong, Pursher and Iwasa. Enzo Fittipaldi took the lead. The faster work of the mechanics gave Purscher and Iwasa a lead over Armstrong, but Markus kept his position ahead of Drugovich. However, Felipe immediately rushed to the attack and overtook the driver Hitech.
On lap eleven, Fittipaldi pitted, clearing the way for Vesti’s lead. Enzo returned to the track in twelfth just ahead of Purscher. Theo didn’t wait for Fittipaldi’s tires to warm up, attacked the Brazilian immediately and stepped forward. Once on an empty track, Purscher quickly started to get away from Fittipaldi, who began to hold back Iwasu. After a few laps, Enzo was able to warm up the tires and show the best lap.
On lap thirteen Dennis Hauger overtook Richard Fershhor in the first corner for third. Both, as well as leaders Vesti and Vips, were still waiting for a mandatory pit stop. In the next lap, Fershor counterattacked and recaptured third place.
On lap seventeen Hauger lost another position and missed Liam Lawson in the first corner. On lap eighteen, first Purscher and then Fittipaldi overtook Amaury Cordil. On lap nineteen Haugera overtook Logan Sargent for fifth. At the end of the lap Dennis went to the pits to change tires and returned to the track in 20th place.
On lap 20, Purscher moved up to seventh and overtook David Beckman. In the following laps, Beckman was overtaken by Fittipaldi, Iwas, Drugovich and Armstrong.
On lap 23, Purscher overtook Clement Novalak and Marcus Armstrong overtook Felipe Drugovic. At the end of the lap, Novalak turned into a mandatory pit stop and returned to the track last.
On lap twenty-six, Richard Fershhor who was in third place went to switch tires from Medium to Soft. The Trident rider returned to the track in sixteenth place. Walk later, leader Frederic Vesti turned into a pit stop, who had to serve a five-second penalty before switching tires. Then Yuri Vips turned into the pits. Both riders got soft tires and returned to the track in ninth and tenth place respectively.
On lap twenty-eight, Logan Sargent pitted and passed Purscher into second. After the pit stop Sargent returned to the track in eighteenth behind Hauger.
On the twenty-ninth lap, leader Liam Lawson turned into a mandatory pit stop, after which Purscher, Fittipaldi and Iwasa came back into the top three. Lawson was on the fourteenth line after the pit stop.
Seven laps before the finish, the first drops fell on the track, but it never became anything serious. At the end of lap 31, Vesti overtook Drugovic at the last corner for fifth.
On lap thirty three, Logan Sargent overtook Jehan Daruwala for tenth. At the same time Dennis Hauger went to the pits for the second time. Drugovic lost three more positions and missed Vips, Fershhor and Lawson.
On lap 35, Vesti passed Armstrong without a problem for fourth. In the next lap, Juri Vips overtook Markus.
Theo Purscher took the race to victory and narrowed the gap in Felipe Drugovic’s individual standings to twenty-one points. On the final lap, Fittipaldi struggled to lose power, but Enzo held onto second.
Championship leader Felipe Drugovic finished ninth. Dennis Hauger set the best lap of the race. The next Formula 2 race will take place at the Belgian Spa circuit on August 26-28.
