Carlos Sainz: Everyone can get their chance in Monaco

Journalists who managed to talk to Carlos Sainz in Monaco noted that the Spanish Ferrari driver was cheerful and ready to fight on the difficult city circuit.

Carlos Sainz: “I love racing here, I have pleasant memories of Monaco because in 2021, when I moved to Ferrari, I was on the podium here for the first time and in 2022 I was close to victory. so I’m looking forward to this Grand Prix. Here you need to be prepared for any development of events, because everyone can win on this track.

On Sunday, any driver from any top team can have a chance of success if they do a good lap in qualifying on Saturday. This is what we need to focus on. I agree that on a regular circuit Red Bull will always be the favorite, but in Monaco and in general on city circuits it can be different, because here someone else can get a chance, and you have to be constantly prepared for that.

Although qualifying is not our strongest point this year, and neither is the car’s behavior in slow corners, I believe that if we make a few necessary changes to the settings we can fight for victory: for that we just need a driving a good lap in the final qualifying. It is also important to have the right tactics on Sunday and then we will have a chance. However, Red Bull and McLaren have no less chance of success.

Honestly, at the start of this weekend we are all on equal footing, and everything will depend on who adapts best to the city circuit. I can’t say our car is fast this year, but that doesn’t mean we don’t have ambitions for victory.

In Monaco the car has to be efficient in every way, you need the rear wing to provide extra downforce, and here it has to be higher than on other circuits. It is also important that the suspension ensures effective road holding.

In addition, it is important to have accurate information about the performance of the tires, how they warm up on the exit lap and how they behave on the fast lap. Overall we need our car to perform better on this track than last year.

In general, Monaco has its own laws, and there are factors at work here that are not so crucial on other routes, for example the clearest possible coordination of actions to avoid traffic problems. The timing of the fast lap has to be perfect.”

Recently, the Sky Sports channel reported that Sainz is not welcome at the Mercedes team, and that in theory he only has two options left for next season: moving to Red Bull or Sauber/Audi.

When asked a direct question, Carlos replied: “Sorry, but I can’t confirm this. I will postpone making a decision as long as possible. I have several options, and I want to choose the one I like best.”
