Fernando Alonso: Our rivals have improved more than us

The Aston Martin team brought new products to the final round at Imola, but the AMR24 car lacked speed all weekend. In Monaco, Fernando Alonso said that the new products made it possible to take a step forward, but from the outside this was not noticeable as the rivals made more progress.

Fernando Alonso: “Our speed has dropped compared to the others. In fact we made the car faster, but apparently the others were able to make a bigger step forward than us. That’s why the team rolled back a bit.

I also did not perform well in the previous two races. I can’t say I rode well in Miami and Imola. I think last weekend we were looking more for answers and I knew that the objectives weren’t good enough and that I couldn’t satisfy the team or me if we didn’t fight to get into the top five or seven.

Sometimes we have test weekends where we experiment with the settings. If the best we can hope for is ninth, then I would rather fix the problems with the car. We forget the current weekend and start all over again for the next stage.

To some extent this is exactly what happened in Imola. But this is even good, because we were able to speed up troubleshooting. We didn’t qualify for points that weekend and were less competitive than normal. “Some weekends it’s worth giving up ninth place and focusing on solving problems.”
